Bengaluru, June 4 (NationPress) What was anticipated to be a momentous celebration transformed into a devastating tragedy as a stampede outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday resulted in the loss of 11 lives and left 33 others injured. This unfortunate event occurred mere hours after the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) secured their first-ever Indian Premier League (IPL) title, drawing a massive crowd of fans to the stadium.

In response, RCB and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) released a joint statement late Wednesday, conveying their deep sorrow and heartfelt condolences regarding the incident. "RCB-KSCA expresses profound concern and heartfelt condolences regarding the tragic event that took place during the celebration organized by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium earlier today," the statement said.

"We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life and the injuries incurred by individuals during this gathering. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families affected by this incident. We sincerely regret this tragedy and extend our solidarity to the grieving families during this immensely challenging time," it continued.

The stampede was reported outside Gate 2 of the stadium shortly after RCB players had visited the Vidhana Soudha to meet Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

Throughout the day, confusion ensued regarding the parade plans, with Bengaluru traffic police initially denying permission due to safety concerns. Nevertheless, thousands of RCB fans had already congregated near the stadium, eagerly awaiting the team's arrival, resulting in an uncontrollable surge.

The lack of effective crowd management led to chaos as barriers were breached and panic spread. Police were overwhelmed, and emergency services rushed to restore order. The injured were quickly transported to Bowring and Vydehi Hospitals. Eyewitnesses recounted scenes of desperation, with individuals getting trampled and many losing consciousness by the time help arrived.

In an effort to provide some relief to the affected families, RCB and KSCA announced a financial aid package of ₹5 lakh for each family that lost a loved one in the incident.

The state government has also pledged ₹10 lakh to the relatives of those who lost their lives in the stampede.

"RCB-KSCA will provide ₹5 lakh each to the families of those who have lost their loved ones. We hope this gesture can provide some support and comfort in their time of grief," the joint statement remarked.

"We want to highlight that this compensation is not meant to define or replace the value of human life, but rather to act as a symbol of support and solidarity during these challenging times. We appreciate your understanding and support," it added.

Despite the tragedy, a brief victory ceremony was conducted inside the stadium, lasting about thirty minutes. Rajat Patidar and Virat Kohli addressed the audience, expressing gratitude for their unwavering support over the years.

The team then took a lap around the ground, celebrating a title that was 17 seasons in the making. RCB triumphed over the Punjab Kings by six runs in a nail-biting IPL 2025 final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Tuesday.

However, what was intended to unify a city in celebration will now be remembered for a severe mismanagement that cost lives. Questions are being raised about the preparedness of local authorities, and an investigation has been initiated to uncover the lapses that led to this horrific stampede.
