Trump Appoints Harmeet Dhillon, Farmer Protest Advocate and India Critic, as Key Civil Rights Official

New York, Dec 11 (NationPress) President-elect Donald Trump has appointed Republican activist Harmeet Dhillon, recognized for her support of the farmers' protest in India and who has raised allegations regarding Indian death squads, as the new assistant attorney general for civil rights.
In his announcement on Truth Social, Trump stated, 'In her new role at the DOJ (Department of Justice), Harmeet will be a relentless advocate for our Constitutional Rights, ensuring that our Civil Rights and Election Laws are upheld FAIRLY and FIRMLY'.
Trump also highlighted that she is a 'respected member of the Sikh religious community'.
On social media platform X, Dhillon, who goes by '@pnjaban', has voiced her support for the farmers' protest and claimed there are 'alleged Indian death squads operating in North America targeting Sikh activists'.
In her criticism of President Joe Biden's administration, she implied that there is a cover-up, stating, 'Our government refuses to provide details. Why?'.
The reference to 'death squads' seems to relate to a case against an Indian citizen and a former RAW official accused of conspiring to assassinate a Khalistani activist in the US, echoing accusations made by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau against India.
Reflecting on her family’s agricultural background, Dhillon expressed, 'I stand with the #FarmersProtests'!
In another post, she urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to engage with the protesters and reach a compromise.
As a descendant of farmers from Punjab, she stated, 'It breaks my heart to witness Punjabi farmers being assaulted for opposing the Indian government's pro-corporate farm bill that threatens their farms, culture, and way of life. PM Modi, hear them, meet them, and compromise'.
The position of assistant attorney general for civil rights that she has been appointed to does not directly oversee international matters and does not manage the two contentious cases involving India.
The ongoing conspiracy case concerning Khalistani activism will not fall under her jurisdiction as it is managed by the assistant attorney general of the national security division.
The bribery allegations involving Indian business leaders are overseen by the deputy assistant attorney general in the Criminal Division.
Trump has yet to announce individuals for these roles.
Trump noted, 'Throughout her career, Harmeet has consistently stood up to defend our cherished Civil Liberties'.
He added, 'Harmeet is among the leading Election lawyers in the country, advocating for the counting of all, and only, legal votes'.
If confirmed by the Senate, Dhillon will become the second Indian American to occupy this senior civil rights position, following Vanita Gupta, who served under former President Barack Obama and was associate attorney general for two years under President Biden.
Dhillon previously ran unsuccessfully for the chair of the Republican National Committee last year.
She has been a member of the Republican National Committee and delivered a Sikh prayer at the Republican National Conventions in 2016 and 2024.
In the 2020 election, she served as a legal adviser to the Trump campaign.
She co-chaired 'Women for Trump', a group focused on mobilizing women’s support for his candidacy.
Her civil rights career has primarily centered around advocating for conservative rights and causes, which she is expected to bring to the DOJ.
Trump mentioned that she has taken on Big Tech for censoring Free Speech, representing Christians who were barred from worshiping together during COVID, and suing corporations that employ woke policies to discriminate against employees.
During the COVID pandemic, she filed lawsuits against California, New Jersey, and Virginia for their lockdown rules that restricted churches from holding services.
She also filed a lawsuit against the University of California Berkeley on behalf of a youth group to allow a right-wing activist to speak on campus.
In another legal battle, she represented a White man who claimed he was dismissed by Google for criticizing the company's diversity programs.
She has also taken legal action against the far-left group, Antifa, for allegedly assaulting a journalist.
Additionally, she filed a case against a California hospital group for providing sex change treatment to a minor without parental consent.
