Punjab Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Kewal Singh Dhillon on Monday, 27 July called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi, holding wide-ranging discussions on the state's economic trajectory, farmer distress, law and order, and the flight of industry from Punjab. The meeting, described by Dhillon as taking place in a 'highly positive and constructive atmosphere,' signals the BJP's intensifying focus on Punjab ahead of the next electoral cycle.

Key Issues Raised

Dhillon apprised the Prime Minister of a broad spectrum of concerns, covering Punjab's economy, the industrial sector, the welfare of farmers and labourers, youth unemployment, deteriorating law and order, and the growing menace of gangsters, according to a statement issued by the party's state unit. Modi is said to have listened to each issue with 'great seriousness,' Dhillon noted, adding that the Prime Minister remains 'deeply concerned about Punjab' and is already aware of the state's prevailing ground realities.

BJP's Critique of the AAP Government

Dhillon trained his sharpest criticism on the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) administration, arguing that its 'failures and directionless policies' have caused Punjab to fall behind both economically and administratively. He said farmers and labourers — 'the backbone of the economy' — are enduring severe distress, while the AAP government, in his characterisation, has retreated into 'false claims and publicity.' He further alleged that deteriorating law and order and poor industrial policy have pushed businesses out of the state, leaving the youth without adequate employment opportunities.

Development Agenda Discussed

According to Dhillon, the discussions with the Prime Minister covered specific proposals: special welfare initiatives for farmers and labourers, expansion of the industrial base, strategies to attract fresh investment, and a broader push to restore Punjab's standing as one of India's leading industrial hubs. Dhillon said these steps are essential to securing meaningful employment prospects for Punjab's youth. Political Signal: Double-Engine Government Push

Dhillon concluded the meeting with an explicit political projection, stating that under Modi's leadership, the BJP will work to establish a 'double-engine government' in Punjab — the party's standard formulation for aligning state and central administrations under its banner.
