Seoul, Oct 4 (NationPress) US President Donald Trump is contemplating a trip to South Korea later this month, just prior to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, according to sources on Saturday.
Government officials are speculating that Trump might engage in bilateral discussions with both South Korea and China before the APEC event commences, potentially departing without attending the main session of the summit, which is scheduled for Oct. 31-Nov. 1 in the southeastern city of Gyeongju, as reported by Yonhap news agency.
"President Trump is anticipated to arrive on Oct. 29 and visit Gyeongju," a ruling party official informed Yonhap News Agency via phone. "However, his itinerary remains unconfirmed and is still under coordination between South Korea and the U.S."
Trump is expected to participate in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in Kuala Lumpur from October 26-28 before proceeding to Japan for discussions with the new prime minister.
Following his visit to Japan, he is likely to head to South Korea, suggesting the possibility of a one-day visit, according to diplomatic observers.
As for his departure after arriving on the 29th, nothing has been confirmed, a government official stated.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent previously mentioned that Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping will have a "pull-aside" meeting in South Korea later this month.
In contrast, a ruling party official played down the chances of a meeting between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un during the APEC summit.
Additionally, Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are expected to have a "pull-aside" meeting in South Korea later this month, with Treasury Secretary Bessent anticipating a "significant breakthrough" in parallel trade discussions with his Chinese counterpart.
Bessent remarked during a CNBC interview that, following Trump's affirmation of a meeting with the Chinese president "in four weeks," South Korea is preparing to host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Gyeongju from Oct. 31-Nov. 1.
"The most significant event will be a pull-aside meeting between President Trump and party chair Xi in Korea towards the end of the month," Bessent concluded.
