Abu Dhabi, March 19 (NationPress) Ongoing Israeli airstrikes targeting civilian and residential zones in Gaza could result in heightened instability within the enclave, leading to a potential escalation of violence throughout the region, according to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Foreign Ministry.
The ministry emphasized the urgent need to prevent further loss of innocent lives and to improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza by ceasing punitive actions against civilians and stopping the escalation, as reported by Xinhua news agency citing the official Emirates News Agency (WAM).
Additionally, it called upon the international community to advocate for a renewed ceasefire, restore electricity, reopen crossings, and ensure the continuous and unrestricted delivery of humanitarian aid to those in need in Gaza, WAM reported.
The ministry reaffirmed the UAE's dedication to supporting global initiatives aimed at achieving a peaceful resolution and safeguarding civilian lives.
These statements followed Israel's extensive airstrikes across Gaza early Tuesday, resulting in over 400 casualties and further undermining a fragile ceasefire that had been in effect since January 19.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu later declared that Israel would intensify its renewed offensive on the enclave, stating that negotiations regarding the Gaza ceasefire would only occur amidst ongoing hostilities.
Earlier in the day, the UN humanitarian chief called for a renewed ceasefire in Gaza and urged Israel to lift the blockade on essential aid and commercial supplies to the region following the latest lethal airstrikes.
"Overnight, our worst fears came true. Airstrikes resumed across the entire Gaza Strip," said Tom Fletcher, UN under-secretary-general for humanitarian affairs, during a briefing to the Security Council via video from Brussels.
"New evacuation orders were issued by Israeli forces, leaving the people of Gaza living in profound fear," he added.
