Did a Technological Failure Trigger Massive Power Outages in Ukraine?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kyiv, Jan 31 (NationPress) A significant technological malfunction has led to extensive power outages throughout Ukraine on Saturday, as reported by local authorities.
Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal took to Telegram to announce that the incident took place at 10:42 a.m. local time (0842 GMT), involving a simultaneous disconnection of power lines connecting the Romanian and Moldovan power grids, along with the line between the western and central regions of Ukraine.
This failure initiated a cascading outage across Ukraine's electrical grid, activating automatic protection systems at various substations, Shmyhal noted, as reported by the Xinhua news agency. As a result, nuclear plant units were unloaded, and emergency power outages were enforced in multiple areas of Ukraine.
In the capital, Kyiv, metro services were halted due to low voltage, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko.
President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that all necessary measures to respond to the situation within Ukraine's energy system have been activated while restoration efforts are in progress.
Earlier, Zelensky indicated that Ukraine is open to observing an energy ceasefire with Russia that began overnight on Friday, as reported by Ukrinform.
"Ukraine is ready to reciprocate the restraint from strikes, and today we did not launch any attacks on Russian energy facilities," Zelensky mentioned during an evening address.
He also noted that the US proposed a one-week pause in assaults on energy infrastructure.
On Thursday, US President Donald Trump stated that he had requested Russian President Vladimir Putin to refrain from attacking the capital of Ukraine and other cities for a week due to the extreme cold weather.
Earlier on Friday, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Russia had agreed to suspend strikes on Ukraine's energy facilities until February 1, following Trump's request, according to the RBC-Ukraine news outlet.
