Is the UN Mission Alarmed by Drone Attacks in Congo?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kinshasa, Jan 3 (NationPress) The United Nations (UN) peacekeeping operation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), referred to as MONUSCO, expressed significant concern on Saturday regarding reports of a drone strike in the nation's conflict-affected eastern region.
In a statement shared on the social media platform X, MONUSCO condemned attacks, including drone strikes, that impact civilians and civilian infrastructure. They called for an independent verification of the incident reported in Masisi-centre, located in North Kivu Province, where fierce clashes have erupted between the DRC government forces and the March 23 Movement (M23) rebel faction.
The UN mission urged all involved parties to adhere strictly to the ceasefire and international humanitarian law, emphasizing the need to prioritize the enforcement of existing peace agreements achieved through various diplomatic efforts.
As per a statement released late Friday by the international medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres, 42 individuals, including women and children, were admitted to Masisi General Referral Hospital following an airstrike that struck a civilian area. The victims suffered from shrapnel injuries and other traumas, with two succumbing shortly after their arrival at the hospital.
Masisi is among the regions that have endured the brunt of the conflict in eastern DRC, as reported by Xinhua. The drone strike occurred amidst heightened fighting last week involving the M23, the DRC military, and their respective allies.
In adjacent South Kivu Province, clashes also erupted Saturday morning between the M23 and pro-government militias known as the Wazalendo near Uvira, a crucial town that the M23 briefly captured on December 10, 2025, only to claim withdrawal a week later, according to local media reports.
The eastern DRC has been afflicted by recurring violence for decades, a situation worsened by the resurgence of the M23 rebellion since late 2021. Kinshasa has leveled accusations against Rwanda for supporting the rebel group, claims that Kigali has consistently denied.
