UN Humanitarian Chief Allocates $5 Million for Sudanese Refugees in Chad

United Nations, Dec 4 (NationPress) The UN humanitarian chief has allocated $5 million in urgent relief to bolster the humanitarian efforts for Sudanese refugees in the neighboring country of Chad, as indicated by UN officials.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that Tom Fletcher, the under-secretary-general and the emergency relief coordinator, issued this funding from the UN's Central Emergency Response Fund, according to the Xinhua news agency.

This new financial support will aid UN agencies and their partners in delivering humanitarian assistance, which includes healthcare, water, food, and shelter for both Sudanese refugees and the local communities in Chad, as stated by OCHA on Tuesday.

OCHA noted that due to an escalation of violence in Sudan's western Darfur region, the number of individuals fleeing to Chad surged in September and October, resulting in over 70,000 newly displaced individuals.

Since the onset of the conflict in Sudan in April of the previous year, OCHA reported that more than 700,000 people have sought refuge in Chad.

In Sudan, Clementine Nkweta-Salami, the UN resident and humanitarian coordinator, voiced her serious concerns regarding reports of shelling in and around the Zamzam camp near El Fasher in western Sudan.

The coordinator highlighted that Zamzam is the largest camp for internally displaced individuals in Sudan, housing over 500,000 people.

Recently, Zamzam faced gunfire on Sunday and Monday, resulting in at least five fatalities and 18 injuries, according to humanitarian organizations.

Nkweta-Salami emphasized that it has been over 232 days since the siege of El Fasher initiated, underscoring the critical need for civilian protection.
