Beirut, March 2 (NationPress) The deputy head of the UN Development Programme (UNDP) emphasized the need for immediate international assistance to help Lebanon restore its security and rejuvenate its economy, as reported by Lebanon's National News Agency (NNA).
"At this crucial moment for Lebanon, international aid can significantly contribute to fostering stability, recovery, and reconstruction," stated Xu Haoliang, who also serves as the undersecretary-general of the UN.
This appeal was made during his two-day trip to Lebanon, where he engaged with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, and visited southern Lebanon to meet with local authorities and displaced individuals, according to Xinhua news agency.
"UNDP is dedicated to collaborating with the government, civil society, and international allies to facilitate essential reforms, encourage good governance, and advance recovery efforts. We will continue to work alongside our partners on the ground to ensure inclusivity, leaving no one behind in Lebanon's journey toward stability and enduring peace," he remarked.
"The path to recovery will be arduous, and the new government must act promptly despite financial limitations," Xu continued.
In partnership with the Lebanese government, UNDP is rolling out a comprehensive recovery initiative aimed at restoring vital services, rehabilitating infrastructure, and assisting communities affected by the crisis.
This initiative also prioritizes support for small businesses and initiatives aimed at enhancing environmental sustainability and revitalizing the agricultural sector, according to the NNA. A specific timeline for the implementation of this package has not been disclosed.
