Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Washington, Jan 4 (NationPress) A command from the United States military has confirmed its awareness of the recent missile launches conducted by North Korea this week, while simultaneously reaffirming its commitment to the security of its allied nations in the region.
The Indo-Pacific Command released a statement following the multiple ballistic missile tests fired by Pyongyang towards the East Sea on Sunday morning (Korea time), marking the first such test of the year.
"We are fully aware of the missile launches and are maintaining close consultations with our allies and partners. Current evaluations indicate that this incident does not present an immediate threat to US personnel or territory, nor to our allies," stated the command, as reported by Yonhap News Agency.
"The United States remains steadfast in its commitment to defend both the US homeland and our regional allies," the statement continued.
These latest launches from the North coincided with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung's planned summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing during his four-day state visit to China this week.
The missile tests also followed an announcement from US President Donald Trump regarding the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro in a military operation in Caracas, aimed at bringing him to justice for drug trafficking and other allegations.
On December 29, South Korea's Defence Minister Ahn Gyu-back expressed concerns about increasing security instability surrounding the Korean Peninsula, attributing this to an escalation in military cooperation between North Korea and Russia.
"The security situation surrounding the Korean Peninsula has become more unstable than ever," Ahn remarked during a speech at a forum focused on the alliance with the United States.
"North Korea is enhancing its nuclear and missile capabilities while modernizing its conventional forces through military collaboration with Russia," Ahn added.
Ahn described such cooperation as a "grave challenge" not only to the Korean Peninsula but also to the global community.
South Korea's intelligence indicates that North Korea has dispatched approximately 15,000 troops to Russia to assist in the ongoing war with Ukraine since October of last year.
In exchange, North Korea is expected to gain access to Russia's advanced military technologies.
