Seoul, March 14 (NationPress) In a show of strength, North Korea launched approximately 10 ballistic missiles towards the East Sea on Saturday, as reported by the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS). This display of military power coincided with the commencement of crucial spring military exercises conducted by South Korea and the United States.

The JCS noted that the missiles were detected originating from the Sunan area in the North at around 1:20 p.m., marking the North's third missile launch this year.

According to the JCS, the missiles traveled roughly 350 kilometers, and further investigations are currently in progress, as indicated by Yonhap news agency.

“With a robust defense posture established between South Korea and the U.S., our military is vigilantly observing North Korea's activities, ensuring we are prepared to respond decisively to any provocations,” the statement emphasized.

This latest missile launch occurred just as the Freedom Shield exercise, which is set to last for 11 days, was initiated by South Korea and the United States on Monday.

North Korea has consistently criticized the joint military drills by the two allies, claiming they are merely a cover for preparations for an invasion, while Seoul and Washington maintain that these exercises are entirely defensive.

Earlier this week, Kim Yo-jong, the influential sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, vehemently criticized the ongoing military exercises, warning of “unimaginably terrible consequences.”

The North also conducted tests of strategic cruise missiles from the Choe Hyon destroyer, with Kim Jong-un emphasizing the necessity to sustain and enhance a “formidable and reliable nuclear deterrent,” as reported by state media from Pyongyang.

This missile launch followed comments from Prime Minister Kim Min-seok, stating that U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed optimism regarding the potential resumption of dialogue with the North Korean leader, although the timeline remains uncertain.

The Prime Minister's statement surfaced amid speculation that Trump might seek a meeting with Kim during his upcoming visit to China for a summit with President Xi Jinping, with Trump's trip reportedly scheduled from late March to early April.

Previously, North Korea fired multiple short-range ballistic missiles towards the East Sea on January 27, asserting that the action aimed to test a renewed large-caliber multiple rocket launcher system.

Point of View

It is crucial to recognize the escalating tensions on the Korean Peninsula. North Korea's missile launches serve as a stark reminder of the fragile security dynamics in the region, particularly amidst ongoing military exercises by South Korea and the United States. The international community must remain vigilant as these developments unfold.
