US Expresses Relief Over Yoon's Decision to Revoke 'Worrisome' Martial Law Declaration

Washington, Dec 4 (NationPress) The United States is relieved that South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has reversed his stance on the martial law declaration and has honored the National Assembly's vote to conclude it, according to a statement from a White House official, highlighting that democracy is at the core of the bilateral relationship.

A spokesperson from the National Security Council made this statement on Tuesday following the approval by Yoon's Cabinet to terminate the enforcement of martial law, which he had declared only hours earlier, accusing the opposition of engaging in anti-state activities, as reported by Yonhap news agency.

“We are relieved that President Yoon has taken a step back from his worrisome martial law declaration and has adhered to the vote of the South Korean National Assembly to revoke it,” the spokesperson stated.

“The essence of the US-South Korea alliance is democracy, and we will keep a close watch on the developments,” the official continued.

Prior to the lifting of martial law, the spokesperson indicated that the US had been seriously concerned, noting that Washington was not given prior notice regarding Yoon's emergency declaration.

The martial law declaration followed the opposition Democratic Party's swift passage of a reduced budget bill in the parliamentary budget committee and the submission of impeachment motions against a state auditor and the chief prosecutor.
