Washington, Sep 30 (NationPress) The United States is heading towards a potential government shutdown as discussions between President Donald Trump and Democratic leaders ended without a resolution.
Without an agreement reached between Republicans and Democrats by Tuesday midnight, funding for the US government will cease, leading to a suspension of several federal services.
After the White House meeting, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer remarked that he and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries illustrated to the president some of the implications surrounding health care, noting that Trump's reaction suggested he was hearing about these issues for the first time.
He further stated that there are “significant differences regarding health care.”
Democrats are pushing to undo the Medicaid cuts included in the “Big Beautiful Bill” passed earlier this year.
Vice President JD Vance, speaking to reporters at the White House, signaled that a shutdown appears inevitable.
“We seem to be on a path towards a shutdown because the Democrats are not making the right choices. I hope they reconsider, but we will have to wait and see,” Vance commented.
Republicans maintain that they will not concede to the Democrats’ requests and have suggested extending funding until November 21.
While the Republicans hold majorities in both the Senate and the House of Representatives, they fall short by seven votes in the Senate, as the funding bill requires 60 votes to proceed.
This would mark the first US government shutdown in seven years, with the last one occurring during the Trump administration in 2018 and lasting 35 days—the longest shutdown on record.
The Trump administration has warned of potential layoffs of federal employees during the shutdown.
Key services such as border protection, law enforcement, and air traffic control will continue to operate, but essential programs like food assistance, government-funded preschool, food inspections, and national park operations may face disruptions.
If the shutdown persists over time, the travel industry could encounter difficulties, as many employees may be required to work without pay and could choose not to report for duty.
