Washington, May 2 (NationPress) US Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth reached out to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday, offering his strong support for India following the tragic Pahalgam terrorist attack.
Secretary Hegseth's call is part of a larger wave of responses from US officials after the attack that resulted in the loss of 26 lives on April 22.
In the immediate aftermath, US President Donald Trump contacted Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Wednesday.
“Today, I had a conversation with Indian Defence Minister @rajnathsingh to express my sincere condolences for the lives lost in last week’s heinous terrorist act,” Hegseth stated.
“I assured him of my strong support. We stand united with India and its remarkable people.”
Unlike Secretary Rubio, Secretary Hegseth did not advocate for de-escalation of regional tensions, especially concerning India’s potential military response against Pakistan, identified as a supporter of the terrorist group responsible for the attack. This group, which has claimed responsibility, is linked to numerous terrorist organizations targeting India, including Lashkar-e-Toiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad.
In a prior statement, Defence Minister Singh informed his American counterpart that “Pakistan has a documented record of aiding, training, and financing terrorist groups.”
“Pakistan has revealed itself as a rogue state that fuels global terrorism and disrupts regional stability. The international community can no longer ignore the reality of terrorism,” Singh emphasized to Secretary Hegseth.
India has pledged to hold accountable both the attackers of the Pahalgam incident and their sponsors, widely interpreted as Pakistan. Prime Minister Modi has entrusted the military with determining the timing, nature, and scope of any retaliatory measures.
In separate communications with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif and India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Secretary Rubio urged both sides to “de-escalate tensions, restore direct dialogue, and uphold peace and security in South Asia.”
