Tokyo, Feb 15 (NationPress) The US Space Force is focused on reinforcing its operations in Japan to address the increasing threats from the Indo-Pacific region, particularly due to advancements in space capabilities by China and Russia, alongside North Korea's ballistic missile tests. Senior officials from the US Space Force's Space Operations Command visited Japan this week to connect with US Space Force members and strengthen ties with the Japanese Self Defence Force (JSDF).
"Although we currently have a limited number of personnel, we plan to expand that presence in the next year or two into a fully capable system that we find necessary here in Japan, as part of a broader network in the Indo-Pacific," stated Lieutenant General David Miller, head of the US Space Operations Command.
He emphasized the longstanding alliance between the US and Japan, noting their commitment to further develop this robust partnership.
"I believe our multilateral partnerships in and across the Indo-Pacific region, as well as globally, play a critical role in stabilizing efforts to counteract threatening activities," Miller remarked.
During their visit to Japan, Miller and other senior US military leaders engaged with the JSDF's Space Operations Group, which was established in 2022, at Fuchu Air Base.
They also met with members of the US Space Forces Japan, which was set up in December 2024 at Yokota Air Base.
The US Space Force and the Japanese Space Operations Group took part in 'Exercise Keen Sword'—an annual bilateral exercise organized by Japan to enhance readiness and interoperability—in November 2024. This iteration marked the largest since the exercise started in 1986.
Amid escalating geopolitical challenges, the Indo-Pacific region continues to be a focal point for various competing powers.
