Did Special Counsel Indict Ex-President Yoon Over Free Opinion Polls?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Seoul, Dec 24 (NationPress) A special counsel team has formally charged former President Yoon Suk Yeol on Wednesday for unlawfully receiving numerous opinion poll results at no cost, in breach of the Political Funds Act.
The special counsel, led by Min Joong-ki, revealed the indictment during a press briefing, also implicating Myung Tae-kyun, a self-identified power broker, for supplying the polls to Yoon.
Yoon and his spouse, Kim Keon Hee, face allegations of acquiring the results of 58 polls valued at 270 million won (approximately US$186,000) between June 2021 and March 2022, coinciding with Yoon's presidential election victory, as reported by Yonhap News Agency.
Kim has already been indicted on similar charges, with a court ruling expected on January 28.
The investigation by the special counsel scrutinized claims that these complimentary polls were exchanged for assistance from the presidential couple in securing nominations for the June 2022 parliamentary by-elections.
These claims were not included in the indictment and may be referred to the police for additional inquiry if a conclusion is not reached before the special counsel's term ends on Sunday.
On December 20, Yoon Suk Yeol appeared before the special counsel team to be interrogated as a suspect regarding corruption allegations associated with his wife, Kim Keon Hee.
This marked Yoon's first appearance before Min Joong-ki's team, which commenced in July to investigate corruption and other allegations involving the former first lady.
Yoon is alleged to have colluded with his wife in her acceptance of free opinion polls valued at 270 million won (around $183,000) from a self-styled power broker, as well as receiving a 140 million won painting from a former prosecutor.
He also faces accusations of violating the Public Official Election Act for allegedly making false statements regarding his wife during a 2021 debate while he was a presidential candidate.
Min's team is also investigating whether Yoon was involved in Kim's alleged acceptance of luxury gifts from others, including Lee Bae-yong, the former head of the National Education Commission, in return for favors.
When questioned by reporters regarding Yoon's knowledge of Kim's acceptance of luxury gifts, his lawyer stated that the former president was "completely unaware."
