Seoul, Aug. 1 (NationPress) A specialized investigation team arrived at a correctional facility on Friday to enforce a detention warrant for the imprisoned former President of South Korea, Yoon Suk Yeol, after he consistently disregarded summonses.
Assistant special counsel Moon Hong-ju was accompanied by a prosecutor and an investigator from the team led by special counsel Min Joong-ki as they entered the Seoul Detention Center in Uiwang, situated just south of the capital, where Yoon has been incarcerated since last month.
The team aimed to extract Yoon from his cell for questioning regarding accusations that he and his spouse, Kim Keon Hee, interfered in the candidate selection for the 2022 parliamentary by-elections.
A court issued the detention warrant on Thursday after the former president ignored the special counsel's summons on two occasions earlier in the week, citing health issues, as reported by Yonhap news agency.
Yoon's legal representatives claimed they submitted his medical documentation and a physician's note to the detention facility on Thursday. They stated he has been experiencing difficulties regulating his body temperature and risks blindness if his eye condition is neglected.
This marks the second instance of a detention warrant being enforced against Yoon.
In January, the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials apprehended Yoon at the official presidential residence under a court-issued warrant and transported him to the same detention center, where he remained until his unexpected release in March.
At that time, he faced arrest on allegations of instigating an insurrection due to his brief attempt to impose martial law in December.
His second arrest occurred last month on supplementary charges related to the martial law attempt.
Even if Yoon is forcibly brought to the interrogation room, there is doubt regarding his willingness to cooperate.
He and his spouse are suspected of receiving complimentary opinion polls from the self-proclaimed power broker Myung Tae-kyun prior to the 2022 presidential election in return for ensuring the nomination of former People Power Party Rep. Kim Young-sun for a parliamentary by-election later that year.
Min's team is also investigating whether Yoon breached election laws by making false statements about his wife's alleged involvement in a stock price manipulation scheme during the 2021 presidential primaries.
The team has been assigned to investigate 19 criminal allegations against the former first lady.
