Seoul, Aug 5 (NationPress) The special counsel team in South Korea has announced that it will not make a second effort to detain the incarcerated former President Yoon Suk Yeol until Wednesday. The team, led by special counsel Min Joong-ki, is currently investigating several corruption claims involving Yoon's wife, Kim Keon Hee, and stated that this decision follows Yoon's appointment of legal representation.
In a notice to the media on Tuesday, they commented, "We plan to discuss the schedule and method of questioning with the lawyer, and therefore have no plans to execute the detention warrant today or tomorrow."
Former President Yoon has chosen Bae Bo-yoon, a prior spokesperson for the Constitutional Court, as his legal counsel.
The special counsel is seeking to question Yoon regarding allegations that he and his wife interfered in candidate nominations for the 2022 parliamentary by-elections, according to reports from Yonhap news agency.
Currently held in custody over a botched attempt to impose martial law in December, Yoon ignored two previous summons last week and did not comply with the team's detention warrant execution last Friday.
The existing warrant will expire on Thursday, but the special counsel has indicated that they will apply for a new warrant if required.
Furthermore, Yoon's wife is scheduled to appear for questioning on Wednesday.
Earlier on Monday, a clash occurred between the special counsel and Yoon's legal team regarding the circumstances under which Yoon was found in his prison cell wearing only his underwear when investigators attempted to detain him last week.
The counsel asserted last Friday that the imprisoned former president resisted their efforts by lying on the floor of his cell wearing just his underwear.
They are pursuing Yoon for questioning regarding allegations of interference in candidate nominations for the 2022 parliamentary by-elections.
