Lusaka, April 18 (NationPress) - Zambia has reported its second death linked to mpox, bringing the total confirmed cases to 49 within the southern African nation.
The Minister of Health, Elijah Muchima, announced on Thursday that the latest mpox-related fatality involved a 10-year-old child from Mpika District in Muchinga Province.
The first death attributed to mpox was documented last month, following the initial case reported in October of the previous year.
During an update press briefing, the minister revealed that there were 13 new cases detected from April 2 to 15, raising the cumulative total to 49, with infections spread across six of the ten provinces in the country.
So far, 32 cases have been treated and discharged, while 15 individuals are currently in home isolation, he stated.
The Health Ministry is collaborating with partners to investigate, identify, and manage mpox cases to avert further transmission, according to reports from Xinhua.
As defined by the WHO, mpox is a contagious disease characterized by a painful rash, swollen lymph nodes, fever, headaches, muscle and back pain, and fatigue. While most individuals recover fully, some may experience severe illness, as reported by Xinhua.
Transmission of mpox occurs primarily through close contact with infected individuals, including household members. Close contact can involve skin-to-skin or mouth-to-mouth interactions, as well as being in close proximity to someone with mpox, which can release infectious respiratory droplets.
Symptoms of mpox typically manifest within a week but can occur anytime between 1 to 21 days post-exposure. The duration of symptoms generally lasts 2 to 4 weeks, although those with compromised immune systems may experience prolonged symptoms.
In some cases, individuals might first notice a rash, while others may initially experience fever, muscle aches, or a sore throat.
The mpox rash often begins on the face and can spread to other body parts, including the palms and soles of the feet. It may also appear on areas of contact such as the genitals. The rash starts as a flat sore that evolves into a liquid-filled blister that can be itchy or painful. As healing occurs, the lesions dry, crust, and eventually fall off.
In related health news, the country has reported a total of 490 cholera cases, following 18 new incidents in the past fortnight. Approximately 480 individuals have been released from care, while nine fatalities have been recorded, according to the minister.
