Washington, Aug 19 (NationPress) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has indicated that Russia has suggested a bilateral meeting with Ukraine, which would be followed by a trilateral discussion.
During a news conference after his discussions with US President Donald Trump at the White House, Zelensky expressed on Monday his willingness to engage in any format of a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
He mentioned that his participation in the subsequent trilateral meeting would depend on the outcomes of the initial meeting.
Zelensky noted that he remains unaware of the specifics regarding the proposed bilateral meeting.
He emphasized that he does not wish to impose conditions on the meeting, as he believes Putin would introduce his own terms.
"I firmly believe that we should meet unconditionally and contemplate the future course towards concluding the war," he asserted.
Putin informed Trump on Monday that he is open to meeting with Zelensky, according to a source familiar with the conversation.
During a phone call with Trump, who he met in Alaska on Friday, Putin expressed his readiness to meet Zelensky during a break from White House discussions with European leaders, the source said on the condition of anonymity.
Trump stated on Monday that he had initiated plans for a two-way peace meeting between Ukraine's Zelensky and Russia's Putin, to be succeeded by three-way discussions that would include himself.
"After our meetings, I contacted President Putin and began organizing a meeting at a yet-to-be-determined location between President Putin and President Zelensky," he remarked after hosting Zelensky and European leaders at the White House.
"Following that meeting, we will hold a trilateral discussion that includes the two Presidents and myself."
President Zelensky expressed an optimistic outlook regarding discussions with US counterpart Trump, indicating that they covered security guarantees.
"We had a very productive conversation with President Trump, and it was truly the best one -- or perhaps the best is yet to come," Zelensky stated during an extended meeting with European leaders.
Both President Zelensky and President Trump expressed optimism that Monday's crucial discussions with Ukrainian and European leaders at the White House could pave the way for trilateral talks with Putin to end Russia's aggression against Ukraine.
This meeting follows Trump's discussions with Putin, who has indicated that the responsibility now lies with Zelensky to agree to concessions that could potentially conclude the conflict.
A group of European political leaders also met with the US President after being excluded from Friday's summit, aiming to protect Ukraine and Europe from any further aggression from Moscow.
