1,425 Individuals from Kerala, Including 700 Nurses, Charged for Defrauding a Kuwaiti Bank

Kochi, Dec 6 (NationPress) The Kerala Police have filed 10 FIRs against individuals from Kerala who exited Kuwait after taking out bank loans.
In total, approximately 1,425 Keralites, including 700 nurses, have departed from Kuwait and established residence in various countries, with outstanding loans amounting to Rs 700 crore that remain unpaid.
A delegation of officials from Kuwait visited the state capital and, following comprehensive discussions with senior Kerala Police representatives, a determination was made to initiate legal proceedings against those who departed Kuwait without settling their loans.
Following the complaint, 10 FIRs have been filed, with the investigation being overseen by an Inspector General of Police.
The filed FIRs pertain to the districts of Kottayam and Ernakulam.
The complainant in this matter is a Kuwaiti national, Muhammad Abdul Vassey Kamran, with one case recorded at the Kumarakom police station in Kottayam district.
The loans were issued by the Consumer Credit department of the Gulf Bank, Kuwait, located at Al-Qibla, Mubarak-Al Kabeer Street, Safat, Kuwait.
The fraud was uncovered in 2022 when authorities from the Kuwaiti bank realized there had been defaults in loan repayments. Further investigation revealed that many individuals who took these loans, ranging from Rs 50 lakh to over Rs one crore, had already left Kuwait for destinations including the US, UK, Canada, and various states in India.
Over the years, the Kuwaiti currency (KD) has maintained a high exchange rate. Currently, one KD equals Rs 275, while one US Dollar is worth Rs 89.
Kuwait is home to a significant number of individuals from Kerala, with a large population of nurses.
