1,966 Route Kilometers of NFR Selected for Advanced Technology System ‘Kavach’

Guwahati, Dec 29 (NationPress) The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), which serves the northeastern states and includes seven districts in West Bengal and five districts in northern Bihar, is poised to implement Kavach 4.0 to enhance train operations, as confirmed by officials on Sunday.
NFR's Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) Kapinjal Kishore Sharma announced that a total of 1,966 route kilometers from Malda town (in West Bengal) to Dibrugarh (in Assam) has been earmarked for the deployment of Kavach.
Sharma mentioned, "As part of the national railway connectivity framework, NFR will soon incorporate this state-of-the-art technological system Kavach 4.0, thereby ensuring safer, more dependable, and efficient rail services within its area of operation."
The CPRO elaborated that Indian Railways is accelerating the implementation of the advanced Kavach 4.0 automatic train protection system across its primary routes.
According to Sharma, Kavach 4.0 is a comprehensive, technology-driven solution devised by Indian Railways to avert accidents and facilitate the seamless operation of trains, adding an extra layer of safety and control.
All locomotives currently equipped with earlier versions of Kavach will be upgraded to the new Kavach 4.0, he stated.
The rollout of Kavach 4.0 by Indian Railways across major routes forms part of a larger initiative to modernize infrastructure and enhance safety standards.
The NFR CPRO indicated that by utilizing technologies like Kavach 4.0, the rail connectivity system aims to facilitate smoother operations, reduce human error, and most importantly, prevent accidents.
The Kavach 4.0 system comprises several essential technological elements, including Station Kavach, which gathers data from Loco Kavach and signaling systems to assist the locomotive, and RFID tags placed along the tracks to monitor the train’s position and direction.
In recent times, Indian Railways has undertaken numerous measures to minimize train accidents.
Through the launch of Kavach 4.0, Indian Railways is dedicated to enhancing passenger safety during travel.
This initiative is part of a broader strategy to fortify the railway network and enhance safety protocols nationwide, Sharma noted.
The system is capable of automatically activating brakes if the loco pilot neglects to do so, as it presents real-time line-side signals in the driver's cabin and provides continuous movement authority updates via radio communication, he highlighted.
Additionally, Kavach 4.0 boasts features such as automatic whistling at level crossings, direct communication between locomotives to avert collisions, and an SOS function to notify authorities in emergencies.
