New Delhi, Dec 1 (NationPress) More than 31.38 crore unorganised workers and over 5.09 lakh gig and platform workers have been registered on the e-Shram portal as of November, as reported to Parliament on Monday.
Currently, 14 schemes from various Central ministries and departments have been successfully integrated with the e-Shram portal, facilitating access to social security, health benefits, and welfare schemes, according to Shobha Karandlaje, Minister of State for Labour and Employment, in a written reply to a Lok Sabha question.
The government initiated the e-Shram (National Database of Unorganised Workers) portal on August 26, 2021, to register unorganised, gig, and platform workers (linked with Aadhaar) by providing them with a Universal Account Number (UAN) based on self-declaration.
In the Union Budget for the financial year 2025-26, the government announced significant measures aimed at the welfare of gig workers on online platforms, including their registration on the e-Shram portal, issuance of identity cards, and extension of healthcare benefits under the Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY).
Importantly, the government is executing the Employment Linked Incentive (ELI) Scheme, known as the Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana, to promote employment generation, improve employability, and enhance social security across all sectors, with a special emphasis on the manufacturing sector.
This scheme, with a budget of Rs 99,446 crore, aims to incentivize the creation of over 3.5 crore jobs in the country over a two-year period.
Furthermore, provisions for ensuring timely grievance redressal, adherence to minimum wages, and maintenance of safe working conditions across sectors in the States have been included in the Industrial Relations Code, 2020, the Code on Wages, 2019, and the Code on Social Security, 2020, respectively.
“Workers can file complaints related to claims for wages, gratuity, maternity benefits, illegal termination, industrial disputes, and other issues on the Samadhan Portal to resolve their grievances. Additionally, complaints can also be submitted via CPGRAMS for prompt resolution,” stated the minister.
