Bhubaneswar, Dec 1 (NationPress) The Commissionerate Police initiated a probe on Monday into the tragic passing of an 18-year-old student from KIIT University, Bhubaneswar, who was discovered hanging in his hostel accommodation.

The incident transpired late on Sunday night. A formal case has been filed at the Infocity Police Station following a complaint lodged by the student's mother, Nirmala Yadav.

The deceased, Rahul Yadav, hailing from Raipur in Chhattisgarh, was in his first year studying Computer Science at KIIT University.

After being informed of the occurrence, Rahul's family made their way to Bhubaneswar on Monday afternoon. The post-mortem was carried out at AIIMS Bhubaneswar under the supervision of a magistrate, and investigators are currently awaiting the autopsy findings.

During the preliminary investigation into Rahul's digital communications, social media interactions, and testimonies from hostel mates and family, police discovered that he had been in a long-term relationship with a girl from his home district in Chhattisgarh, who is presently studying in Maharashtra.

Rahul's mother claimed that harassment and intimidation from the girl's family compelled her son to take this drastic action.

“Distressed by the unfortunate and unnatural demise of her son, Nirmala Yadav filed a brief complaint citing harassment from the girl’s father, mother, and brother, all of whom are from Chhattisgarh,” stated the Commissionerate Police.

The police are continuing their investigation, examining all facets of the case, including the involvement of the girl’s family, before making further advancements.

In an official statement, KIIT University expressed their condolences over the tragedy, labeling it as “extremely sad and unfortunate.”

The university asserted that the case seems to be tied to a personal relationship.

“It has come to our attention that the incident is related to a love affair. The student allegedly took this drastic step due to personal issues, as confirmed by his mother,” the statement read.

This incident has sparked calls for a thorough and unbiased investigation from various state legislators, spanning across party lines.

Notably, KIIT University faced significant scrutiny earlier this year following the deaths of two female students from Nepal.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) had also formed a fact-finding committee to look into the suicides that occurred on February 16 and May 1.
