New Delhi, March 24 (NationPress) Indian Army medical professionals successfully executed over 350 cataract surgeries on former servicemen, including individuals from Nepal, during a cutting-edge eye surgical camp held at 158 Base Hospital, Bagdogra, West Bengal, as reported by an official on Monday.
A total of 1,752 ex-servicemen and their families underwent screening for various eye conditions, including cataracts, from March 20 to March 24, he mentioned.
Among those treated, 17 ex-servicemen and their families from Nepal benefited from the camp's services, he added.
An experienced medical team from Army Hospital (Research & Referral) in New Delhi, Base Hospital, Delhi Cantt, and Command Hospital in Lucknow collectively facilitated the surgical camp.
Additionally, over 500 pairs of high-quality glasses were distributed at no cost. The utilization of advanced equipment and premium lenses guaranteed that patients received the utmost care, underscoring the Ministry of Defence’s commitment to quality healthcare.
This initiative was led by Brig Sanjay Kumar Mishra, an ophthalmic surgeon and Head of the Department of Ophthalmology at Army Hospital (Research & Referral), New Delhi, according to a statement.
Brig S.K. Mishra has successfully performed over 100,000 cataract, vitreoretinal, refractive, and glaucoma surgeries.
He emphasized that the camp brought world-class treatment directly to the veterans who have dedicated their lives to the nation, spanning the beautiful foothills of the Himalayas across a large area including West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, and even Nepal.
The camp ensured that veterans received the care they deserve without the burden of travel, he elaborated.
This initiative was carried out under the guidance of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Chief of the Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi at the request of Governor of West Bengal C.V. Ananda Bose.
This effort exemplifies the cooperative actions between state and military leadership, particularly the Tri Shakti Corps, aimed at improving healthcare accessibility for the courageous individuals who have served the nation.
