Kangpokpi ambush: 4 Naga civilians killed, Manipur Home Minister vows justice
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Four members of the Liangmai Naga community were killed and one person injured in an armed ambush along the IT Road in Kangpokpi district, Manipur, on Thursday. Manipur Home Minister Konthoujam Govindas Singh swiftly condemned the attack, vowing that those responsible would face the full force of the law and that no one attempting to derail the peace process would be spared.
The Attack: What Happened
The ambush occurred between Makui Ashang and Thanamba Naga, a stretch that serves as a vital lifeline for Naga communities living along the IT Road in Kangpokpi. The four victims were identified as Wisobou Charenamai, Tadsongbou Ringkangmai, Mariakdibou Wijunamai, and Anil Wijunamai.
Ringkangmai was the founder and Principal of Right Path School, a private educational institution, while Charenamai served as Chairman of the Chawangkining Village Authority and was a former Vice-President of a local organisation. One other person sustained injuries in the attack.
What the Government Said
Home Minister Konthoujam Govindas Singh, in an official statement, said the attack had caused 'deep anguish among the Naga community and peace-loving people of Manipur' and struck at collective efforts to restore normalcy in the violence-hit state.
'Those responsible will face the full force of law. Anyone attempting to obstruct or derail the peace process will not be spared,' Singh said. He extended condolences to the bereaved families and urged community leaders, civil society organisations, and Naga community members to maintain peace and exercise restraint. 'Justice will be pursued firmly, while peace and unity must prevail,' he added.
Security Forces Launch Combing Operations
Central and state security forces launched a massive combing operation shortly after the incident to trace and apprehend the suspected militants. Search operations were intensified in and around the ambush site in the hilly district.
Notably, Kangpokpi is predominantly inhabited by the Kuki-Zo community, though members of the Naga community also reside in different parts of the district — a demographic complexity that has historically contributed to inter-community tensions in Manipur's ongoing conflict.
Naga Organisations Respond
Several Naga bodies, including the United Naga Council (UNC) — the apex organisation of Naga people in Manipur — claimed that two to three armed Kuki militants carried out the attack on unarmed Naga civilians. The UNC and allied organisations strongly condemned the killings and demanded immediate punitive action against those responsible, describing the incident as a serious threat to peace and communal harmony in the region.
The killings have triggered widespread concern across Naga civil society and deepened anxieties about the fragility of any peace initiative in Manipur, a state that has witnessed persistent ethnic violence for over two years. The security forces' search operations remain ongoing.
