Bhopal, Dec 1 (NationPress) The Winter Session of the Madhya Pradesh Vidhan Sabha commenced with loud protests and an innovative performance by members of the Opposition both inside and outside the Assembly on Monday.
As the proceedings kicked off, Congress legislators, led by the Leader of Opposition (LoP) Umang Singhar, braved the chilly December air to stage a symbolic demonstration that garnered significant media coverage.
A contingent of Congress MLAs arrived brandishing posters that drew attention to the Coldrif cough syrup disaster, which tragically claimed the lives of over 25 children in Chhindwara and nearby regions a few months prior.
The affected children, primarily under five years old, experienced acute kidney failure and serious brain damage after ingesting the tainted syrup. Tests revealed that the Coldrif syrup contained dangerously high concentrations of diethylene glycol (DEG), with one batch having an alarming level of nearly 48.6 percent, far exceeding the safe threshold of 0.1 percent recognized internationally.
The Opposition's protest took a creative turn as they enacted a scripted drama to emphasize the Coldrif syrup tragedy. One female Congress MLA portrayed the character of demoness 'Surpanakha,' engaging in a dialogue with Singhar.
Meanwhile, a circle of Congress MLAs brandished posters with slogans attributing blame for the horrific incident to the ruling BJP.
"Corruption has surged under the BJP administration, and the list of scandals is expanding. Over 25 innocent children have died due to the contaminated Coldrif cough syrup in Chhindwara," Singhar informed reporters.
He accused the BJP government of attempting to silence the Opposition and redirect attention from significant public issues by reducing the length of the session.
The five-day Vidhan Sabha session will include four meetings focused on critical issues, alongside the introduction of at least three key Bills (Amendment) in the House.
For this Winter session, the Assembly Secretariat has received a total of 1,497 questions from the Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs). Additionally, it has processed 194 notices for calling-attention motions, six adjournment motions, 14 private members' resolutions, 52 zero-hour submissions, two notices under Rule 139, and 15 petitions.
