At least 57 pilgrims from Tamil Nadu remain stranded in Nepal's flood-ravaged Rasuwa district as of 26 August, with rescue teams struggling to reach several pockets following a sharp rise in water levels. The floods have claimed at least 17 lives, and more than 400 Indians are reportedly among those trapped across the northern region.

Where the Tamil Nadu Pilgrims Are

The stranded pilgrims are currently sheltering in the Timure area of Rasuwa district. They are reportedly from Chennai, Kumbakonam, and other parts of Tamil Nadu, and had travelled to Nepal on a religious pilgrimage. Separately, 22 pilgrims from Kumbakonam have already been rescued and moved to a Nepal Army camp, where they are receiving temporary accommodation and assistance.

Rescue Operations and What Is Hampering Them

Helicopters have been deployed to evacuate people from the worst-affected areas, but operations have been severely hampered by high water levels, damaged roads, and adverse weather. Officials confirmed that helicopters were unable to land in several locations, leaving multiple groups awaiting evacuation. The floods have reportedly washed away around 19 bridges, damaged nearly 40 kilometres of roads, and swept away approximately 200 vehicles — damage that has compounded the logistical challenge for rescue teams on the ground.

Scale of the Crisis: Missing Tourists and Indians Abroad

According to a preliminary assessment by the Nepal Tourism Board, 384 tourists have been reported missing based on information from tourism stakeholders and travel agencies. Of these, 291 are foreign nationals and 93 are Nepalese citizens. Authorities cautioned that the figures are being verified and the count of missing or stranded persons could change as communication is restored in remote locations. Indian officials are separately compiling details of tourists and pilgrims who may be in the affected areas.
