Kathmandu, July 10 (NationPress) The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology in Nepal has issued a flood alert today, cautioning residents about rising water levels in smaller rivers across various districts.
While the major rivers such as Koshi, Narayani, Karnali, Mahakali, Kamala, Bagmati, and Rapti remain below dangerous thresholds, localized flooding remains a concern, as reported by local media.
Districts like Doti, Dadeldhura, Kanchanpur, and Kailali are particularly vulnerable to sudden floods due to increasing water levels.
Tragically, nine fatalities have been confirmed in the flash floods that hit Nepal's Rasuwa district on Tuesday, according to the Nepal Police.
Search efforts for 19 individuals who went missing in the aftermath are ongoing. Among those missing are 11 Nepali citizens, including two police officers, and six Chinese nationals.
The catastrophic flood has left Rasuwa in ruins, prompting extensive rescue and relief operations to aid those affected.
Arjun Paudel, Chief District Officer of Rasuwa, stated, “We are actively engaged in rescue operations. More than 150 people, including 127 foreign nationals, have been airlifted to Kathmandu.”
He added, “The area is experiencing disruptions in electricity and telephone services, complicating rescue efforts. We are maintaining limited communication through the border with China. Restoration of telephone services and electricity supply is in progress.”
Moreover, over 2000 individuals are stranded due to the flooding, with only a few days’ worth of food supplies left.
“Our primary focus is on food delivery, restoring power and communication services, and continuing search and rescue operations,” Paudel remarked.
This major flood has also washed away the Nepal-China Friendship Bridge and several newly imported electric vehicles parked at the dry port.
The flood has severely impacted four hydropower plants, and local officials report that the dry port is currently nonfunctional.
Concerns have been raised regarding the severe disruption of the Rasuwagadhi–Timure area, with numerous roads rendered impassable and essential services like electricity, internet, and telephone lost since Tuesday.
