Minor girl rescued from Kolkata hotel; 4 traffickers arrested
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata Police rescued an abducted minor girl from a hotel room in Garfa, South Kolkata, on Wednesday night, 27 August, arresting four men accused of luring her under the pretence of a singing job and confining her with the intent to traffic her into the flesh trade. The operation, confirmed by police on Thursday morning, prevented the girl from being moved out of the state.
How the Abduction Unfolded
According to police, the girl had recently been employed as a singer at a bar in Kolkata. It was there that the four accused allegedly identified her as a target. They reportedly approached her with an offer of a higher-paying singing assignment at a hotel in Garfa, South Kolkata, and persuaded her to visit the property to finalise the arrangement.
Once she arrived, one of the accused took her to a hotel room and locked it from the outside. She remained confined for several days before managing, with the assistance of a hotel staff member, to contact a relative. That relative immediately alerted the local police station, triggering a swift response.
The Rescue and Arrests
“The cops conducted a raid at the hotel and rescued the abducted minor girl from the hotel room and also arrested the four persons involved in her kidnapping,” a city police officer said.
The four men arrested have been identified as Asish Bhardwaj, Swaroop Das, Sheikh Shahabuddin, and Muzaffar Hossain. During interrogation, all four reportedly confessed to their involvement in the abduction and admitted their intention was to force the girl into the flesh trade.
Suspected Links to a Larger Trafficking Racket
Investigating officials suspect the four men are part of a wider girl-trafficking network operating in the city. Interrogation is ongoing to identify other individuals connected to the racket. “Fortunately, we got information about the abduction in time and hence were able to rescue her from the hotel room before she could be trafficked outside the state,” the officer added.
Bar Authorities to Face Scrutiny
Police have indicated they will also question the management of the bar where the minor had been employed as a singer, to determine how and why a minor was hired for such an assignment. The inquiry is expected to widen as investigators trace the full scope of the trafficking network.
