Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 25 (NationPress) The late Chief Minister of Kerala and prominent CPI(M) figure, V.S. Achuthanandan, has been posthumously awarded the Padma Vibhushan, which is India’s second-most prestigious civilian award. This accolade signifies a pivotal moment of national acknowledgment for one of the state's most impactful political personas.

This honor recognizes Achuthanandan's extensive public service, characterized by his unwavering stand on corruption, land rights, women's rights, environmental protection, and social justice. His integrity garnered respect from across the political spectrum.

Having held the office of Kerala's Chief Minister from 2006 to 2011, he was widely regarded as the ethical compass of the Leftist movement within the state.

Achuthanandan's political legacy includes initiating land reform movements and taking decisive stances on significant issues like illegal land encroachments and environmental issues. His influence on Kerala's governance and public dialogue has been profound.

Even after exiting active politics, he continued to symbolize integrity and ideological dedication. The Padma Vibhushan was also awarded posthumously to Justice K.T. Thomas, a former Supreme Court judge, for his remarkable contributions to India’s judiciary.

Justice Thomas, known for his astute legal insights and courageous decisions, significantly shaped constitutional interpretations and judicial accountability.

Alongside him, P. Narayanan, the former editor of Janmabhumi, was honored with the Padma Vibhushan for his pivotal role in journalism and public thought. In the Padma Bhushan category, the iconic Malayalam film star Mammootty received recognition for his outstanding contributions to Indian cinema.

With a career spanning over forty years, Mammootty has raised the bar in Malayalam cinema, earning both national and international acclaim for the industry. Also awarded the Padma Bhushan was Vellapally Natesan, General Secretary of the SNDP Yogam, acknowledged for his efforts in social reform and organizational leadership, furthering the legacy of Sree Narayana Guru.

Several distinguished individuals from Kerala received the Padma Shri. Veteran scientist A.E. Muthunayagam was recognized for his groundbreaking work in science and technology.

Celebrated dance instructor Kalamandalam Vimala Menon was honored for her lifelong commitment to classical dance and cultural education. Environmental activist G. Kollakkal Devaki Amma was also awarded the Padma Shri for her relentless grassroots efforts in environmental conservation.

These honors collectively underscore Kerala’s significant contributions to India's political, cultural, scientific, and social realms, celebrating lives devoted to public service and national advancement.
