Kozhikode, Dec 8 (NationPress) The Leader of Opposition in Kerala, V.D. Satheesan, expressed that the conviction of the individuals involved in the 2017 actress assault case is a source of relief. However, he raised significant concerns regarding the overall safety of women and the future direction of the prosecution in this matter.
Among the accused, the first six have been found guilty, while three others, including actor Dileep, were acquitted.
Describing the crime as a tragedy that no woman should ever experience, Satheesan noted that the punishment of the offenders provides a sense of justice to the survivor.
“What the victim endured is something that no woman should ever have to face. It’s uplifting to see that the criminals have been brought to justice. This ruling should serve as a deterrent against future incidents of such nature,” he remarked.
Satheesan acknowledged the efforts of the late P. T. Thomas, the former Congress MLA of Thrikkakara, for his pivotal role in ensuring that the case was pursued vigorously to its current outcome.
“His unyielding and fearless involvement was crucial in advancing the case. Without his intervention, there was a risk that the case might have faltered. He firmly believed that when a woman is harmed, the perpetrators must not evade justice,” he stated.
Emphasizing the need for a more robust and scientific approach to women’s safety in Kerala, Satheesan expressed alarm over the increasing incidence of crimes against women alongside the rising proliferation of narcotics in the state.
“Women’s safety must be prioritized. The existing systems are inadequate in providing comprehensive protection or ensuring justice for those who report crimes. We require frameworks that meet the demands of today’s society,” he asserted.
Regarding the legal path forward, the Leader of the Opposition noted that it is expected for the prosecution to file an appeal.
He highlighted that verdicts are based on evidence, and if there are any deficiencies in how the evidence was evaluated, the prosecution is entitled to seek a review from the appellate court.
“Whether the prosecution has genuinely failed will be determined once the detailed judgment is available,” he concluded.
