Mumbai, Dec 8 (NationPress) Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has voiced his support for cricketing icons Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, dismissing any efforts to exclude these renowned players from the Indian ODI squad. Afridi emphasized that they are the foundation of the team and should remain integral until the 2027 World Cup, according to a news report released on Monday.
“It’s undeniable that Virat and Rohit are the core of India’s batting lineup. Based on their performance in the recent ODI series, it’s evident they can compete until the 2027 World Cup,” he stated in a report by Telecom Asia Sport.
Afridi urged that the two legends should be included in major series. “Both stars should be preserved, and when India faces weaker opponents, they can experiment with new players and provide rest to Virat and Rohit,” the former opener remarked on www.telecomasia.net.
Afridi criticized Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir, with whom he had numerous on-field confrontations during his career. “Initially, it seemed that Gautam believed his perspective was infallible, but over time, it became clear that he wasn’t always correct,” he commented.
Afridi expressed satisfaction over Rohit breaking his record for the most sixes in ODI cricket. “Records are made to be surpassed, and I’m thrilled that a player I admire has achieved this feat,” he said.
“My record for the fastest century lasted nearly 18 years, but it was ultimately broken, highlighting the nature of cricket where one player sets a record and another eventually breaks it,” he added.
Rohit surpassed Afridi’s tally of 351 sixes in 398 matches during the second ODI against South Africa in Raipur, now holding 355 in just 279 matches. “I played alongside Rohit for the Deccan Chargers in my only Indian Premier League (IPL) season in 2008, and I was impressed by his potential,” he shared.
“During our practice sessions, his batting skills caught my attention. I knew he would one day represent India, and he has proven to be an extraordinary player,” Afridi concluded.
