Perth, Oct 17 (NationPress) Australian batsman Travis Head opines that Indian icons Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are poised to extend their ODI careers through the 2027 World Cup, despite the swirling rumors regarding their future in this format.
The finalists of the 2023 ODI World Cup are set to clash in a three-match ODI series commencing this Sunday in Perth. For this critical tour of Australia, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has appointed Shubman Gill as the ODI captain, relieving Rohit of his leadership responsibilities. This decision is widely interpreted as a symbolic farewell for both Rohit and Kohli on Australian ground, raising speculation that they might not play until the next 50-over World Cup.
“They have been phenomenal for India. I believe Axar can speak even more highly of them than I can. Both are exceptional players, among the best in white-ball cricket. Virat is arguably the greatest white-ball player out there, and Rohit isn't far behind,” Head expressed to reporters in Perth on Friday, with Axar Patel by his side.
“As an opener, I hold great respect for what Rohit has accomplished. I have no doubt they will be missed eventually, but I think they will both push through to 2027,” he added with a glance at Axar, who smiled in agreement. “It’s fantastic for the game to see them still playing.”
Axar Patel, who will take on the all-rounder’s role in Ravindra Jadeja’s absence, stated that both Rohit and Virat are consummate professionals, eager to make an impact in the series opener.
“They are world-class athletes. They understand what’s required, and they are primed to perform. They are professionals who know what to do,” Axar noted.
“Regarding their form, they have been training diligently, and I believe they are ready. Everybody has passed their fitness tests and is eager to get started now,” he concluded.
