New Delhi, Oct 17 (NationPress) Former Indian leg-spinner Amit Mishra expressed his desire to see legendary batsmen Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli participate in the 2027 ODI World Cup. However, he stressed that their continuous performance and fitness will be crucial for their inclusion in this major tournament.
The series against Australia, commencing in Perth on Sunday, marks the return of these veteran players to international cricket after a significant gap of over seven months. They last appeared in India’s victory during the 2025 Champions Trophy in March.
“I envision India securing victory in this series against Australia. I am a full-fledged supporter of the Indian team and wish for their triumph. The performances have been impressive. The experience of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli adds a positive dynamic to the Indian squad,” Mishra stated.
“As senior players, I want them to excel for the Indian team for as long as possible. Their presence is essential in the World Cup. Under pressure, young players receive invaluable support from their experienced counterparts,” Mishra mentioned in a conversation with IANS during the MM Dialogues 2.0 event in Gurugram on Friday.
He further elaborated that the longevity of both Rohit and Virat in ODIs hinges on their fitness and consistent performance. “I’ve said it before that I want to see them compete there. However, they need to maintain their performance levels. Fitness is paramount for the Indian team. Playing matches following this series or engaging in domestic games will benefit both them and the Indian team,” he emphasized.
“Their place in the World Cup hinges on performance. It’s well-known that only those who perform will secure a spot on the team. Although seniority matters, performance holds significant weight these days. It’s about being match-fit. I hope they can participate actively,” Mishra explained.
“Communication is vital. Engaging with players leads to clearer minds. The more you converse with them, the better they understand their responsibilities,” he elaborated.
Discussing the challenges of focusing on a single format, Mishra expressed that this clarity could help both players concentrate more effectively. “I believe they will sharpen their focus, knowing they are playing in one format. They are aware of their batting positions and the bowlers they face. Their experience is crucial, but they must remain match-fit. As reiterated, players need to meet certain fitness levels to represent the Indian team,” he remarked.
“Everyone is working towards this. However, the key for them—regardless of their performance—is to stay match-fit and participate in domestic competitions. This is beneficial for them, and I’ve stated this previously; it benefits the team as well,” he added.
Mishra noted that having senior players like Rohit and Kohli will be essential for Shubman Gill's development as a captain in ODIs. “Gill has managed his captaincy duties commendably thus far. He leads from the front and presents a positive image. The highlight is his enjoyment of the role. He communicates effectively with all players. Since taking on the captaincy, he has been performing admirably,” he mentioned.
“As a young captain, he faces no pressure, and he continues to perform well for the Indian team. I hope that, as captain, he can achieve success alongside senior players. When significant series arise, their experiences are invaluable for the team. It’s beneficial for both the team and Shubman’s growth as a captain,” he concluded.
“Both are players eager to assist others. They won’t let their egos interfere or refuse to play; instead, they are very supportive, particularly Rohit. I’ve witnessed Rohit’s positive attitude towards younger players consistently. Their support is invaluable, and I believe it will greatly aid Shubman Gill,” he added.
“Kohli’s presence is also advantageous for the team because, during high-pressure situations, he guides players on how to navigate tough phases, when to be aggressive, and when to play cautiously. Therefore, I hope both perform well together, as it will greatly benefit the Indian team,” he concluded.
