New Delhi, Oct 9 (NationPress) Despite the Men’s ODI World Cup being more than two years away, Shubman Gill, India's Test captain and newly appointed ODI skipper, has hinted at the pivotal role of batting legends Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the team's strategy.
Both Kohli and Rohit, who have stepped back from T20Is and Tests, will join the Indian squad prior to their flight to Australia on October 15 for a three-match series commencing in Perth four days later. “Indeed, the experience both of us possess and the numerous matches they have secured for India is unparalleled,” said Gill.
“There are very few players globally who combine such skill and experience. I truly appreciate that,” Gill expressed during a press conference ahead of the second Test against the West Indies, set to kick off at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Friday.
Gill expressed his intention to emulate the “calmness” that Rohit, who led India to victories in the T20 World Cup and Champions Trophy, instilled in the dressing room during the 50-over format.
“I have adopted many qualities from Rohit bhai - especially his calm demeanor and the camaraderie he cultivates within the team, which I aspire to embody,” he added.
Reflecting on his rise to ODI captaincy, Shubman Gill stated he feels privileged to lead the national team after being appointed Test captain in May. “The announcement came right after a Test match (post-game in Ahmedabad), but I was informed slightly earlier.”
“It is undoubtedly a significant responsibility and an even greater honor. I am thrilled to lead my country in this format. The past few months have been exhilarating for me, and I eagerly anticipate what lies ahead,” he noted.
“I aim to remain present-focused and not dwell on past achievements, whether personal or team-related. My goal is to look forward and seize every opportunity in the upcoming months,” he concluded.
