Mumbai, Oct 14 (NationPress) As the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections approach, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) are set to unveil a significant project aimed at redeveloping Mata Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar and Kamraj Nagar in North East Mumbai. This initiative will cover an expansive area of 31.82 hectares and will provide assistance to around 17,000 slum dwellers.
This marks a historic moment for the MMRDA, as it is the first time in its 50-year history that the Authority will take on the role of a Developer for a slum redevelopment project, while the SRA will serve as the Planning Authority.
The foundation stone for the rehabilitation of Mata Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar and Kamraj Nagar will be laid by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis alongside Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar.
As per MMRDA's information, the slum rehabilitation scheme encompasses a total area of 31.82 hectares, affecting 17,000 slum households. Among these, the eligibility for 10,000 households has been established, with development agreements signed with nearly all eligible families. The project is projected to reach completion within 36 months.
The redevelopment plan will feature roads, street lighting, drainage systems, water supply, playgrounds, and a primary school. Following the issuance of the Occupancy Certificate (O.C.), maintenance of the buildings will be handled by the contractor for the next 10 years.
In the initial phase, the rehabilitation of 4,345 slum dwellers is planned. A biometric survey has been completed, and Annexure-2 has been released by the SRA. All residents in Phase-1 have received Rs 137.50 crore as advance rent for a two-year period.
The estimated construction cost for Phase I of the buildings is set at Rs 1,299 crore (excluding GST), with a projected completion time of 36 months. The subsequent phase will commence post the completion of Phase I. A contractor has been appointed for the construction of approximately 4,345 rehabilitation homes (including amenities), with work starting right after the foundation stone ceremony.
This project extends beyond mere residential development; it aims to establish a commercial hub, fostering employment and self-employment opportunities for local residents, and promoting women's empowerment. Every qualified slum dweller will receive a 1 BHK residential unit with a carpet area of 300 sq. ft at no cost.
The initiative will also include the installation of water treatment (WTP), sewage treatment (STP), and organic waste conversion (OWC) systems. An integrated infrastructure plan will be devised for the entire area, ensuring access to high-quality urban amenities. Furthermore, the development will include solar panels and rainwater harvesting facilities.
