Ahmedabad businessman arrested for cheating chemical supplier of ₹22.25 lakh
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
The Ahmedabad Crime Branch's Economic Offences Wing (EOW) on Monday, 26 October arrested a 51-year-old businessman for allegedly defrauding a colour dyes and chemicals supplier of ₹22.25 lakh by purchasing goods on credit, then closing his warehouse and office and absconding without payment. The accused, Mohit Sahani, proprietor of Electrogeeco Chemical Industries, is the subject of at least three registered cases across Gujarat.
How the alleged fraud unfolded
According to police, Sahani allegedly procured colour dyes and chemicals worth ₹22,25,480 from Datt Chemical, owned by complainant Kunal Thekdi, through six bills raised between 6 September and 30 September 2025. He reportedly gained Thekdi's confidence by repeatedly assuring him that payments would be made promptly.
After taking delivery of all the goods, Sahani allegedly shut down his warehouse in the Narol area of Ahmedabad and his office in Vapi and fled, leaving the supplier unpaid.
How police tracked the accused
'The New Cloth Market Wing of the Economic Offences Wing arrested Mohit in Ahmedabad after gathering information through technical evidence and human intelligence,' police said. The operation was carried out under the directions of senior officials who had issued standing orders to trace individuals involved in economic offences, cheating, and criminal breach of trust.
The complaint was filed by Thekdi, 21, a businessman residing in the Maninagar area of Ahmedabad. A case has been registered at the Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) police station under Sections 316(2), 316(5) and 54 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Prior cases against Sahani
Officials confirmed that two other cases had previously been registered against Sahani. The first, under Section 316(2) of the BNS, was registered at Dungra police station in Valsad district on 7 January 2026. A second case was registered at the DCB police station in Ahmedabad under Sections 316(2), 316(5) and 61 of the BNS. The pattern of cases across multiple districts suggests a wider trail of alleged financial fraud, according to investigators.
Investigation status
Further investigation into the matter is currently underway. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of additional complaints emerging given Sahani's reported history across Gujarat.
