Mumbai, Dec 12 (NationPress) Fisheries and Ports Minister Nitesh Rane stated on Wednesday that the implementation of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) based system is essential for boosting fish production and enhancing the safety of fishermen.

He emphasized that adopting AI technology could usher in a second blue revolution in the state. During a meeting, Rane highlighted the significance of maritime security and the protection of fishermen.

He requested the department to devise a thorough plan for the transparent application of various schemes utilizing AI technology.

"AI must be deployed for improving fish production, safeguarding fishermen, registering fishermen and fishing vessels, promoting freshwater fishing, managing fish sales, logistics, security, and disaster response mechanisms. A pilot model of such a security system should be established at Sassoon Dock. After assessment, it should be evaluated for statewide implementation," he remarked.

“The AI-driven security system at Sassoon Dock will incorporate fish assessment, protection of fishermen during emergencies, fish disease detection, AI-enabled fish market operations, maritime security, patrolling, monitoring and preventing illegal fishing, and overseeing fishermen welfare initiatives. This system will also boost fish production and ensure transparency,” Rane stated.

The minister noted that AI technology could enhance the living conditions of fishermen and significantly contribute to the state's economy through increased fish production.

In the meantime, Rane announced that the department will offer training to fishermen to enhance both freshwater and marine fisheries within the state. He directed the department to initiate a pilot training program in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district and in one coastal district.

“The Fisheries Commissioner’s Office should assess the training program and its impact on fish production and fishermen's benefits. The department should allocate funds for this training program from the planning committees of the respective districts,” he added.

Rane mentioned that the Vadhavan Port under construction in Palghar district is expected to be operational by 2026.

A training program should be established to develop skilled personnel for the Vadhavan Port, with immediate implementation. Priority should be given to coastal districts to create substantial employment opportunities in these areas. He instructed the department to allocate resources from District Planning Committee funds.

“In Sindhudurg district, funding will be sourced from the District Planning Committee. A significant number of skilled workers are necessary for Vadhvan Port. The training program will cover sustainable fishing practices, eco-friendly fishing, addressing the challenges faced by fishermen in their operations, their safety, and the application of modern technology,” Rane concluded.
