Chennai, Oct 22 (NationPress) With the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) issuing red and orange alerts for numerous districts throughout Tamil Nadu, opposition figures -- AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami and BJP state president Nainar Nagenthran -- on Wednesday called upon the DMK government to implement immediate precautionary and relief measures to avert loss of life and property.
Palaniswami stated that the deep depression forming in the Bay of Bengal is projected to deliver extremely heavy rainfall to northern coastal districts, including Chennai and the Cauvery Delta region.
“Given the likelihood of increased precipitation, I urge the DMK government to take precautionary actions on a war-footing,” he emphasized.
He encouraged the public to stay vigilant and adhere to all safety advisories issued by authorities.
The former chief minister also directed AIADMK officials and party members to remain alert, assist residents in impacted areas, and collaborate with local authorities to provide necessary support.
Concurrently, BJP state president Nainar Nagenthran expressed similar concerns, urging the ruling DMK to ensure that comprehensive preventive measures are implemented in light of forecasts predicting very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across multiple districts.
Pointing out reports of two separate low-pressure systems developing over the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, he noted that the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for eight districts and an orange alert for ten others.
“At this critical time, the DMK government should not limit itself to mere video conferences. It must act on a war footing and make all necessary arrangements to confront any potential disaster,” he stated, referencing Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s recent virtual review meeting with District Collectors.
The BJP leader stressed that the state administration must be fully prepared to manage emergencies arising from the intensifying northeast monsoon.
He also urged fishermen and the general public to exercise caution and prioritize safety during this period of heavy rainfall.
