Bhopal, June 22 (NationPress) A skilled team of physicians at AIIMS Bhopal has triumphantly conducted a challenging and uncommon surgery involving the replacement of a aortic valve in a male patient using artificial grafts as part of the Bentall procedure.
As per official reports, a 44-year-old male from the Sehore district in Madhya Pradesh had been experiencing chest pain and palpitations for the last six months before being admitted to AIIMS Bhopal.
Prior to his admission, the patient visited several hospitals where tests indicated an Aortic Aneurysm (an abnormal swelling of the aorta) measuring approximately 8 to 10 cm in his chest.
His condition was deteriorating rapidly and posed a risk of rupture at any moment.
Furthermore, the patient’s aortic valve was significantly leaking, as noted by Dr. Yogesh K. Niwaria, who, along with his colleagues, performed the surgery.
Dr. Niwaria explained that to address this issue, the patient required a replacement of both the aorta and the aortic valve using artificial grafts, a procedure known as Bentall surgery, which is recognized as highly intricate.
Compounding the difficulty, the patient had a B-negative blood type, a relatively uncommon variant, making the surgical process even more challenging.
Despite numerous consultations and evaluations at various medical facilities, the patient and his family were unable to find satisfactory solutions.
After comprehensive assessments by the institute's expert team, the decision was made to proceed with the surgery.
During the operation, the enlarged aorta and the malfunctioning aortic valve were successfully excised and replaced with artificial grafts as part of the Bentall procedure.
Following the surgery, the patient was moved to the ICU, where he exhibited consistent improvement in his condition.
“A remarkable point in this case is that, despite the rarity of his blood type, the patient did not require a blood transfusion during this highly intricate surgery, showcasing the surgical accuracy, collaboration, and commitment of our expert medical team,” stated Dr. M. Kishan, who also contributed to the surgery.
Commending the team for their successful operation, AIIMS Bhopal Director, Ajai Singh, remarked, “This case exemplifies AIIMS Bhopal's clinical excellence. Conducting such a highly intricate and high-risk cardiac surgery on a patient with a rare blood type not only highlights our surgical prowess but also our commitment to delivering world-class healthcare services to the residents of Madhya Pradesh.”
The entire advanced treatment was provided at no cost under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, making it highly advantageous for the public.
Previously, patients from Madhya Pradesh requiring such complex surgeries had to be referred to advanced centers outside the state. Now, they can receive this essential treatment right here at AIIMS Bhopal.
