Ahmedabad, June 22 (NationPress) The state of Gujarat is currently undergoing intense rainfall, which has persisted for several days, resulting in substantial water inflows into its river systems and dams, especially in the regions of Saurashtra and southern Gujarat.
According to the latest information from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), an average rainfall of 15.04 mm was recorded across 159 talukas in the state over the past 24 hours, concluding Sunday evening.
As per the official update released at 5 p.m. on Sunday, water has been added to 206 dams statewide, with eight dams now operating at full capacity and 14 on high alert due to rising water levels.
The IMD's status report reveals that the Narmada dam currently measures 389.96 feet, compared to a full reservoir level of 454.98 feet.
Further reservoir data shows that: eight dams are completely full, 26 dams have reached 70% to 100% capacity, 22 dams are between 50% and 70%, 57 dams fall within the 25% to 50% range, and 99 dams are below 25% capacity.
In addition to the 14 dams on high alert, nine have been issued alerts, and 11 are under a warning status, prompting state authorities to monitor the situation closely.
The India Meteorological Department has also declared a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall in seven districts: Banaskantha, Rajkot, Devbhoomi Dwarka, Porbandar, Junagadh, Navsari, and Valsad.
These areas are anticipated to encounter heavy showers and potential waterlogging.
An orange alert has been issued for a broader belt of 24 districts, including Kutch, Morbi, Amreli, Bhavnagar, Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Mehsana, Patan, Sabarkantha, and Surat, indicating heavy rainfall with possible disruptions.
Simultaneously, yellow alerts for moderate to heavy rain have been issued for Vadodara, Chhota Udepur, and Narmada districts.
The IMD predicts ongoing rainfall activity throughout Gujarat until June 28, urging residents to exercise caution, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone regions.
