The All India NR Congress (AINRC), the ruling party of Puducherry led by Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, has begun laying groundwork for its expansion into neighbouring Tamil Nadu — marking the party's first serious attempt to establish a political footprint outside the union territory. The move is being positioned as a long-term organisational strategy ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.

Decision in Principle

According to party sources, the AINRC leadership has already taken a decision in principle to launch a formal Tamil Nadu unit. Organisational work is expected to accelerate over the coming months, with senior leaders already in discussions with politicians and prominent public figures across the state to build a broad-based network before any formal launch.

Key Meetings and Outreach

In a significant development, Gandhimathi Parasuraman, former working president of the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) and daughter of PMK founder Dr S. Ramadoss, met Chief Minister Rangasamy in Puducherry on Saturday. She was accompanied by her son, Mugundan Parasuraman, former president of the PMK Youth Wing. Although the meeting was officially described as a courtesy call, party insiders said it formed part of the ongoing consultations with leaders interested in the AINRC's expansion plans.

Earlier in the same week, former PMK MLA Arul Murugan and his supporters also met Rangasamy at a private hotel in Puducherry. That meeting, attended by former Minister K. Lakshminarayanan, reportedly focused on strengthening the party's organisational structure in Tamil Nadu and identifying potential leaders to drive its growth in the state.

Wider Interest from Rival Parties

Party insiders indicate that several leaders and office-bearers from the PMK, Indian National Congress (Congress), and other Tamil Nadu political parties have expressed interest in joining the AINRC. A number of them are expected to formally enrol with the party in the coming weeks as the expansion drive gains momentum.

Chennai Event on August 9

To formally signal the beginning of its outreach, the AINRC will organise a public function at Kamarajar Arangam in Chennai's Teynampet on 9 August, timed to commemorate the birth anniversaries of former Chief Minister K. Kamaraj and Chief Minister N. Rangasamy. The event is expected to outline the party's vision for Tamil Nadu and offer an early indication of its political strategy, though the formal launch of the state unit is likely to follow at a later stage.

Rangasamy's Governance Record as the Pitch

Party leaders believe Rangasamy's governance record — spanning five terms as Puducherry Chief Minister — and his invocation of the ideals of K. Kamaraj will form the cornerstone of the AINRC's appeal as it seeks to carve out space in Tamil Nadu's highly competitive political landscape. This is the first time the party has moved beyond the boundaries of the union territory in its organisational history.
