  • Safety remains Air India’s top priority.

New Delhi, July 25 (NationPress) An Air India flight bound for Mumbai made an unexpected return to Jaipur shortly after take-off on Friday, as the flight crew detected a potential technical problem with the aircraft.

The flight, which took off from Jaipur at 2:01 p.m., was set to land in Mumbai at 3:35 p.m., but was forced to turn back just 18 minutes into the journey.

According to an Air India spokesperson, "Flight AI612, which was traveling from Jaipur to Mumbai on July 25, returned to Jaipur shortly after departure due to a suspected technical issue. After troubleshooting checks, it was confirmed to be a false alarm."

“Following clearance for operations, the flight continued to Mumbai. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this unexpected disruption may have caused to our passengers. The safety and well-being of our travelers is our utmost priority," the spokesperson emphasized.

This incident follows closely behind a separate issue involving a flight from Hong Kong, where an auxiliary power unit caught fire after landing at Delhi airport on Tuesday.

"Flight AI 315, arriving from Hong Kong to Delhi on July 22, 2025, experienced a fire in the auxiliary power unit shortly after it had safely landed and parked at the gate,” the airline spokesperson stated.

“The incident occurred while passengers were disembarking, and the APU was shut down automatically in accordance with the system design,” the statement continued.

The aircraft involved has since been grounded for further investigation, and the aviation regulatory body has been informed, as stated by Air India. The airline acknowledged that some damage had occurred to the aircraft.

“Nonetheless, all passengers and crew members disembarked safely. The aircraft has been grounded for further inquiry, and the relevant authority has been notified,” the airline confirmed.

On Tuesday, Air India also announced the completion of precautionary inspections on the fuel control switch locking mechanisms of all Boeing 787 and Boeing 737 aircraft in its fleet.

The airline reported that no issues were discovered during these inspections, which were conducted following safety directives issued by India’s aviation regulator, DGCA, earlier this month after the tragic Air India Boeing 787 crash in Ahmedabad that claimed 260 lives.

“Air India has successfully completed precautionary inspections of the Fuel Control Switch locking mechanisms on all Boeing 787 and Boeing 737 aircraft in its fleet,” the airline concluded in a statement.
