Chennai, July 26 (NationPress) A 25-year-old expectant mother from Solagar Dhoddi in the Thalavadi Hills, who had been unaccounted for over the past 10 days after declining hospital admission, successfully gave birth to a healthy baby boy at the District Government Hospital in Chamarajanagar, Karnataka, during the early hours of Saturday.

The woman, named Shevanthi, began experiencing labor pains around 10 p.m. on Friday. Initially, she was taken to the Government Upgraded Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Thalavadi. However, due to the baby's estimated weight of approximately 3 kg and the possibility of complications, she was referred to the Chamarajanagar Government Hospital.

Accompanied by three staff members from the health department, Shevanthi was transported to the hospital, where she had a normal delivery at 12:05 a.m.

A health department representative confirmed that both mother and baby are doing well. Shevanthi is anticipated to be discharged within three days, contingent on their recovery progress.

Shevanthi’s situation garnered attention after she vanished from her home in early July, opting out of hospital care even though her delivery was due on July 7. It was later revealed that she had traveled to a relative’s house in Karnataka. After undergoing a scan in Chamarajanagar, doctors adjusted her expected delivery date to July 27.

During this period, her family lost contact with her, leading them to file a missing person report with local authorities.

Following persistent counseling efforts, particularly by S. Kannaiyan, president of the Thalavadi Farmers’ Foundation, Shevanthi eventually returned home.

On July 18, she visited the Thalavadi hospital for a routine examination. Although doctors recommended immediate hospitalization, she insisted on returning only when her labor began.

Chamarajanagar, located 23 km (a 30-minute drive) from Thalavadi, is the preferred referral hospital for expectant mothers in the area due to its accessibility and facilities.

In contrast, the Sathyamangalam Government Hospital is situated 58 km away and requires navigating the challenging Dhimbam Ghat Road, which features 27 hairpin bends within the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve, complicating emergency access.

Authorities and health officials have emphasized the critical need for timely antenatal care and collaboration to ensure positive maternal and child health outcomes.

Point of View

I emphasize the critical nature of maternal health and the community's role in supporting expectant mothers. Shevanthi’s story highlights the importance of timely medical care and the cooperation of family and healthcare professionals to ensure safe outcomes for both mother and child.
