Bengaluru, Nov 19 (NationPress) A heartbreaking event unfolded at the state-run Haveri Women and Children's Hospital in Karnataka, where a newborn tragically passed away, allegedly due to the carelessness of hospital personnel, as reported by police on Wednesday.
The incident has raised significant concerns, prompting the Karnataka BJP unit to criticize the Congress-led government for its apparent negligence.
This unfortunate event occurred on Tuesday at the district hospital when a pregnant woman, experiencing labour pains, was reportedly not given a bed and was made to wait on the floor.
As she attempted to reach the restroom, she unexpectedly delivered her baby in the hospital corridor, resulting in the infant's death.
The family asserts that the woman was forced to remain on the floor for nearly an hour due to the staff's inability to provide a bed.
The woman, Rupa Girish Karabannavar (30), hailing from Kakol village in Ranebennur taluk, arrived at the hospital around 9 a.m. on Tuesday.
Relatives claim that when they sought assistance from the staff for directions to the restroom, they received no proper guidance. Ultimately, while on her way to the restroom, the woman went into sudden labour and gave birth in the corridor leading to the toilet.
During this incident, the newborn unfortunately suffered injuries and died immediately.
The family has accused the medical staff of severe negligence, alleging that they failed to provide timely care and were preoccupied with their mobile phones instead.
Distraught relatives expressed their outrage and insisted that no family should endure such an ordeal in the future.
In response to the incident, the Leader of the Opposition, R. Ashoka, criticized the Congress-led government on Wednesday.
"Mr. Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao, what is happening in your department? During our previous BJP administration, we had planned to establish help desks in all government hospitals to assist poor patients seeking treatment," he stated.
Ashoka also condemned the Siddaramaiah government, claiming, "The Congress-led administration has increased healthcare service fees, provided substandard medicines leading to the deaths of pregnant and postpartum women, and closed Jan Aushadhi stores within government hospital premises."
He urged the state government to concentrate on enhancing the conditions in government hospitals.
