New Delhi, Sep 23 (NationPress) The NHRC has requested a report from the Delhi government within two weeks concerning the tragic death of a destitute patient's baby, which occurred after delivery in a government-run hospital's washroom, an official stated on Tuesday.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) took suo motu cognizance of a media report regarding this incident at the Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences (IHBAS), where the destitute woman was admitted on September 7, under a court order.
The media report indicated that the baby died due to an alleged lack of necessary facilities at the hospital.
It was reported that hospital staff took an excessive amount of time to find a clamp to cut the umbilical cord before transporting the woman and her newborn to the nearby Swami Dayanand Hospital via ambulance. Unfortunately, the infant could not be saved despite the urgent transfer.
The Commission noted in its statement that if the information from the media report is accurate, it highlights a significant issue of human rights violations.
Therefore, the NHRC has issued notices to the Chief Secretary of the Government of NCT of Delhi, requesting a comprehensive report on the matter within two weeks.
According to the media report published on September 10, hospital staff confirmed that the expecting mother was admitted even though the IHBAS lacked adequate facilities for childbirth. She is now reportedly receiving treatment at another government facility.
Previously, the Commission took suo motu cognizance of a media report indicating that one worker died and three others sustained critical injuries while cleaning a sewer in the Ashok Vihar area of north Delhi.
The NHRC announced on Monday that it has issued notices to the Chief Secretary of the Government of NCT of Delhi, the Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation, and the Delhi Police Commissioner, seeking a detailed report within two weeks.
As per the media report, co-workers of the victims claimed that no safety equipment was provided by the private construction company that had employed them for the job.
The Police Control Room reportedly received a late-night call about the incident, and all four workers were taken to Deen Dayal Upadhyay (DDU) Hospital, where doctors pronounced one of them dead. The other three were admitted to the ICU in critical condition. The manager of the company is currently being questioned.
