Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh and the people of Manipur have contributed ₹1 crore to the Assam Chief Minister's Relief Fund to bolster flood relief and rescue operations in the state, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Tuesday, 12 August. The contribution comes as Assam continues to battle the impact of its annual floods, which have disrupted life across several districts.

Sarma's Acknowledgement on X

Sarma expressed his gratitude through a post on social media platform X, thanking both the Manipur Chief Minister and the people of the neighbouring state for their solidarity. 'I sincerely thank Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh and the people of Manipur for their generous contribution of ₹1 crore to the Chief Minister's Relief Fund towards the #AssamFloodsResponse,' Sarma wrote.

He described Assam and Manipur as 'sister states', emphasising that their bond goes beyond shared borders and is anchored in common history and kinship. 'This act of generosity reflects the enduring spirit of oneness among the people of the North East,' he added.

Scale of the Flood Crisis in Assam

Assam's annual flood season has, as in previous years, inundated large swathes of the state, forcing thousands of residents to abandon their homes as water levels rise. The state government has been coordinating relief and rescue operations across affected districts, mobilising resources and working with multiple agencies to reach flood-hit communities. The ₹1 crore from Manipur is expected to supplement these ongoing efforts.

Notably, Assam's vulnerability to seasonal flooding is well-documented — the Brahmaputra and its tributaries overflow almost every monsoon, affecting millions. This year's floods have once again strained local administration and relief infrastructure.

Northeast Solidarity in Focus

The gesture from Manipur underscores a pattern of inter-state solidarity that has defined the Northeastern region during natural disasters. The two states share deep historical, cultural, and geographical ties, and have repeatedly extended support to each other during crises. Sarma's public acknowledgement — 'To everyone in Manipur who stood with Assam in this hour — thank you, from the bottom of my heart' — reflects the political and emotional weight attached to such contributions.

This is not the first time neighbouring states have rallied around Assam during its flood season, though a formal monetary contribution of this scale from Manipur draws particular attention to the strengthening of regional bonds under the current administrations.

Cabinet Decisions and Ongoing Response

Separately, the Assam Cabinet met on Tuesday under Sarma's chairmanship in Dispur, taking several decisions aimed at strengthening the state's flood response framework. Details of those decisions were shared by the Chief Minister following the meeting. The government has stated it will continue coordinating with central and state agencies to ensure relief reaches all affected communities.

With the monsoon season still active, authorities are expected to sustain relief operations in the weeks ahead.
