New Delhi, June 2 (NationPress) The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has requested a report from the Bihar government and the state police chief within a two-week timeframe regarding the tragic death of a minor rape victim at the Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH), as confirmed by an official on Monday.
The NHRC has taken suo motu cognizance based on a media report published on June 1, 2025, which included allegations that the 10-year-old girl was left in an ambulance for several hours before she could receive a bed for treatment.
She was sexually assaulted in Muzaffarpur district on May 26, and her assailant attempted to murder her by stabbing her in the chest and throat. She was admitted to the hospital in a critical state on May 30, and the alleged perpetrator has since been arrested.
The rights body issued a notice stating, “The Commission has acknowledged that the details of the news report, if accurate, indicate a severe violation of human rights. Consequently, it has sent notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police in Bihar, requesting a comprehensive report within two weeks.”
“As per the media report published on June 1, the same offender had previously attacked another 12-year-old girl and attempted to kill her,” the NHRC notice elaborated.
This heinous rape-cum-murder incident has ignited a political uproar in election-bound Bihar, with the Congress party alleging that “rapists and criminals are increasingly emboldened as the JD(U)-BJP government allows influential individuals to evade justice despite serious accusations.”
Bihar's Leader of the Opposition, Tejashwi Yadav, has also criticized Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and his administration regarding the rape and death of the minor.
Yadav stated, “In terms of law and order, healthcare, education, or employment, this double-engine government has utterly failed. The Chief Minister has never shown remorse regarding such issues. I doubt he is even aware of this brutal rape case.”
Yadav vehemently condemned the Chief Minister and his two deputies for allegedly focusing on political events and election preparations while neglecting public concerns and the need for justice.
