Another Maternal Mortality Case in Karnataka: Family Claims Medical Negligence

Belagavi (Karnataka), Dec 23 (NationPress) In the wake of multiple maternal deaths in Karnataka, another tragic incident surfaced in Belagavi city on Monday. The relatives of the deceased have claimed that the woman’s death was a result of negligence on the part of the medical staff.
The woman who passed away has been identified as Vaishali Kotabagi, hailing from Gowdawada village located near Hukkeri town. She succumbed to her condition on Sunday.
The family further accused that the prescribed medications contributed to her demise.
As per the police reports, Vaishali experienced labor pains four days prior and was initially taken to Hukkeri Taluk Hospital. Due to the unavailability of a doctor, she was transferred to Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences (BIMS).
She gave birth to a baby girl via cesarean section on Saturday. However, on Sunday morning, she began to experience severe chest pain, leading to her admission in the ICU, where she unfortunately passed away.
The family has raised concerns about potential foul play and is demanding explanations from the hospital regarding the unexpected death. They declined to release the body for a post-mortem examination, ultimately leading BIMS staff to send the body to the mortuary.
Interestingly, the deceased had recently celebrated her marriage anniversary just five days before her tragic death. The family is now calling for a thorough investigation into this case. The police have mentioned that they are awaiting the post-mortem results to take further action.
The Karnataka BJP has criticized the state’s Congress-led government during the winter session concerning the alarming rate of maternal deaths reported throughout the state. R. Ashoka, the Leader of the Opposition, highlighted the issue in the Legislative Assembly, indicating that the situation has deteriorated to the point where women are apprehensive about visiting government hospitals.
During discussions about maternal deaths in the Legislative Council, Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao called for stricter regulations on the influential pharmaceutical industry in the nation. “I want to emphasize that the laws governing drugs are insufficient. There has been no precedent for action against pharmaceutical companies,” he stated.
This troubling case of maternal mortality has been referred for judicial scrutiny by the Congress administration.
Reports of maternal deaths have surfaced from government hospitals in Ballary, Raichur, and various other districts across northern and central Karnataka.
